Jerry Montgomery is entering his third year as a defensive line coach for the Panthers. Montgomery earned full-time status in 2007 after working as a graduate assistant in 2006.

As a defensive unit in 2007 the Panthers ranked No. 6 in the nation in rushing defense (91.0 yards/game) and No. 7 in the nation in scoring defense (16.85 points/game).

The Panther defensive line saw three of its four starters earn all-Gateway honors in 2007. Leading the way was first-team pick James Ruffin, who had 52 tackles and 8.0 tackles for loss. Mark Huygens was named to the second team and Jordan Lacy earned honorable mention status.

Montgomery joined the UNI football staff as a graduate assistant for the 2006 season and helped both Mark Huygens and Jordan Lacy tally second-team all-Gateway Conference honors. Huygens ranked second in the Gateway in quarterback sacks (7.0), while Lacy ranked eighth (4.5).

Montgomery is familiar to the state of Iowa as he was a four-year starter on the defensive line at the University of Iowa from 1998 to 2001. After receiving his degree from the University of Iowa, Jerry signed with the New Orleans Saints. He spent time in the AFL playing for the Chicago Rush, the Colorado Crush and the Las Vegas Gladiators.

At the completion of his playing career, Montgomery joined the coaching staff at North Iowa Area Community College as the defensive coordinator.

Montgomery played his prep ball in Nevada for Virgin Valley High School where he was named the State Player of the Year.

Jerry and his wife Natalie have two sons, Jayden (4) and Tevyn (3).
