Senior placekicker Brian Wingert tied the UNI school record for
consecutive games scored at 33. Wingert drilled a 20-yard field goal at
the 9:37 mark of the first quarter to tie the mark held by Brian
Mitchell (1989-91).
Wingert only needs two more field goals to become the Panthers'
all-time field goals leader. Wingert made field goals from 20 and 40
yards on Saturday against Western Illinois. Wingert has converted 58
field goals in a Panther uniform. Brian Mitchell holds the UNI field
goal record with 59 three-pointers.
Senior tight end Ross Hannam caught his first collegiate touchdown
pass Saturday on a 24-yard score from junior quarterback Eric Sanders.
Junior safety Chris Parsons intercepted a pass in his third straight
game when he picked off WIU quarterback Steve LaFalce on the fifth play
of the game. Parsons' safety set up the Panthers' first score of the
game, a 20-yard field goal by Brian Wingert. Parsons is tied for the
team lead in interceptions this season with five. Senior cornerback Dre
Dokes also have five interceptions.
Sanders' touchdown pass was his 49th career toss and moved him past
Steve Sandon (1978-81), who threw 48 career touchdown passes for the
Panthers.
Junior running back Corey Lewis nabbed a career-best six receptions
for 78 yards against the Leathernecks.
Senior linebacker and co-captain Dave Schratz tallied a career-high
12 tackles against the Leathernecks. Schratz notched 11 solo tackles and
one assisted stop against WIU. Schratz's previous career-high came one
week ago at Youngstown State, when he was credited with 11 tackles.
It was the first time since Dec. 9, 2005 against Texas State, that
the Panthers did not have a 100-plus rushing effort. Sophomore Corey
Lewis led the Panthers with only 37 yards rushing on 11 attempts.
UNI still holds a 23-12 lead in the all-time series with Western
Illinois, despite the Leathernecks' win on Saturday in the UNI-Dome.
However, it was WIU's third win in in the last four games in the UNI-Dome.
