Senior placekicker Brian Wingert broke the UNI school record for consecutive games scored by scoring a point in his 34^th straight game.
Wingert made an extra point with 50 seconds left in the first quarter to break the mark held by Brian Mitchell (1989-91).
Wingert also tied the school record for three-pointers in a career when he booted a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was Wingert's 59^th career field goal and tied with Brian Mitchell.
A pair of UNI Panthers made their first career starts on Saturday.
Sophomore right tackle Bob Swift and senior linebacker Andrew Williams earned starting nods for the first time in their careers. Swift helped open running lanes for the UNI running backs, who tallied 251 rushing yards in the game. Williams recorded four tackles and two tackles-for-loss.
Junior wide receiver Terrell Allen scored his first receiving touchdown of the season on a 56-yard toss from Eric Sanders to give UNI a 24-20 lead with 5:03 left in the game. Allen's only other score in a UNI uniform came in the season opener against Drake when he returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a score. Allen has tallied 16 catches for
184 yards this season.
Senior Dre Dokes notched his 17^th career interception and his sixth of the season when he picked off Western Kentucky quarterback Justin Haddix in the end zone.
Sophomore running back Corey Lewis topped the 100-plus yard mark for the fourth time this season and fifth time in his career. Lewis rushed for 123 yards on 20 carries and scored a 30-yard touchdown with 1:32 left in the game to clinch the victory over Western Kentucky. Lewis has rushed for 661 yards and seven scores this season.
UNI tallied a season-high five quarterback sacks against Western Kentucky. UNI's previous high this season came when they had three sacks against South Dakota State (Sept. 16) and at Iowa State (Sept. 30).
Sophomore Mark Huygens led the pass rush with two sacks.
Western Kentucky was averaging 181.0 yards per game rushing going into the game on Saturday, but UNI held the Hilltopper rushing attack to
75 yards on 30 carries.
UNI tied the all-time series between the two schools at 5-5. It was the final game between the schools as Western Kentucky announced it is going to transition to Division I-A in 2007 and leave the Gateway Football Conference. WKU will play football in the Sun Belt Conference beginning next season.
