The University of Northern Iowa football team has been tabbed with a No. 6 FCS preseason ranking in Phil Steele's College Football Preview magazine.

Senior defensive end James Ruffin (Burnsville, Minn.) and senior offensive tackle Austin Howard (Davenport, Iowa) have each been named to Phil Steele's preseason All-America team.

Ruffin was also named the preseason Missouri Valley Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year, while earning first-team preseason all-MVFC honors.

Ruffin is joined on the preseason all-MVFC first team team by Howard, senior quarterback Pat Grace (Sioux City, Iowa), senior center Austin Steichen (Remsen, Iowa), senior linebacker Josh Mahoney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and sophomore return specialist Jarred Herring (Burlington, Iowa).

Senior running back Derrick Law (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore offensive lineman Jay Teply (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) were named to the second team.
