For the first time in the program's history, the University of Northern Iowa has had three players in the same year named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams.

The Panthers had Ben Boothby (Clinton, Iowa), Ryan Mahaffey (Grinnell, Iowa) and Josh Mahoney (Sioux Falls, S.D.) named to the University Division District VII squads. Boothby and Mahoney tallied first-team honors, while Mahaffey secured second-team status. The squads are selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). UNI's previous high for Academic All-District honors was two and it occurred on four different occasions (2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005).

For being selected to the first-team, Boothby and Mahoney will appear on the ballot for consideration for the honor of Academic All-American.

Boothby earned first-team Academic All-District status for the first time after posting a 3.81 grade point average, while majoring in exercise science/pre-physical therapy. The sophomore defensive lineman has secured 23 tackles this season, including 4.5 tackles-for-loss and two quarterback sacks.

It marks the second straight year that Mahoney has earned first-team Academic All-District honors. Mahoney, a senior linebacker with a 4.0 grade point average in English and economics, was named a second-team Academic All-American in 2008. In 2009, Mahoney leads the Panthers with 63 total tackles through eight games. Mahoney registered a season-high 16 tackles against No. 5-ranked Southern Illinois (Oct. 17). Mahoney ranks No. 10 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in tackles per game (7.9). Mahoney is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy (Academic Heisman).

For Mahaffey, a junior tight end, it marks the first time he has earned Academic All-District honors. Mahaffey, an economics major with a 3.69 GPA, has started all eight games this season for the Panthers. Mahaffey has caught five passes for 36 yards and two touchdowns in 2009. Mahaffey caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Pat Grace in the season-opening contest against the Iowa Hawkeyes (Sept. 5) to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. He also caught a two-yard score in a 62-7 win over Indiana State (Oct. 3).

District VII includes schools in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Selections are open to student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and carry at least a 3.30 G.P.A. The University division includes all Division I schools.

The academic all-district team honors student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. The awards are sponsored by and voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
