The University of Northern Iowa men’s golf team stands in ninth place after the first day of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Individually, Panther junior Troy Hoffman is tied for 12th place with a +9 total of 153.  The tournament is being held at Dalhousie Country Club, a par 72 course of 7,242 yards.

The Panthers were in ninth place after the first 18 holes of the day, posting a 327 team total.  Hoffman shot a team-best 77 in the first round, including chipping in for birdie on consecutive holes, at number 12 and 13.  Hoffman was the only UNI player to score in the 70s in the first round, as conditions were very windy throughout the morning round.

UNI bettered its team score by 16 shots in the second round, carding a 311, as the wind decreased considerably.  Hoffman continued his fine play, as he carded a four-over par 76, including his third chip in from off the green, this time for eagle on the par five 18th.  Hoffman also had birdies on the ninth and 15th holes.  Hoffman was matched in the second round by junior Tyler Johnson, who also posted a 76.  Johnson birdied five holes in the second round, including three of his last four holes on the day.  Fellow junior Kyle Bermel also had a solid second 18 holes, recording birdies on the third and fifth holes, on his way to a five-over round of 77.

Defending champion Wichita State is the 36-hole leader, as the Shockers have a two-round score of 591 to hold a 13-shot advantage over second place Illinois State.  WSU’s Dustin Garza is the leader after the first day, with a two-round score of even par 144.

The tournament’s final 18 holes will be played tomorrow, with UNI’s tee times beginning at 8 am.
