Cape Girardeau, Mo. - The University of Northern Iowa men’s golf team finished eighth at the 2009 State Farm MVC Championship.  The tournament was held at Dalhousie Country Club, a par 72 course of 7,242 yards.

Entering the final 18 holes trailing both Bradley and Creighton by nine shots, UNI put together its best team round in more than a month.  The Panthers posted an impressive 299 today, which the fifth-best score of the entire MVC Championship.  Prior to today, UNI’s last round below 300 was March 20 in the second round of the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., when it fired a 290.

For the tournament, UNI posted a three-round total of 937, storming past Creighton in the final round, ending 15 shots in front of the Bluejays.  UNI just missed catching Bradley for seventh place, finishing one shot behind the Braves.

“I’m very proud of our team,” head coach John Bermel said.  “To break 300 on this golf course really says something, because it’s an extremely tough course.  We struggled yesterday, but were able to bounce back today and put together a very good round.”

Tyler Johnson paced the Panthers today, tying his season best with a three-under par 69.  The junior from Belle Plaine, Iowa, had four birdies and just one bogey in his round, ending in 10th place with a 228 total.  Johnson’s round of 69 was the lowest 18-hole total by any player during the MVC championship.

“Tyler was outstanding,” Bermel said.  “He really played a super round, including back-to-back birdies on the back nine when he knocked the ball to within three feet of the pin each time.  He was great all day long.”

Troy Hoffman posted a 76, his third straight round in the 70s, to finish one shot behind Johnson with a 229, good for a tie for 11th position.  Junior Kyle Bermel and senior Eric Sipple each carded 77s today for the Panthers, with Sipple ending his career with his best-ever round.  Bermel finished with a 238 total and 30th place, while Jared Doerfler had a 247 to place 40th, and Sipple was one shot behind Doerfler with a 248, tying for 41st position.

Wichita State won the tournament for the second straight year with a three-round score of 882.  WSU’s Dustin Garza and Connor McHenry shared medalist honors, each posting an even par total of 216.
