Panther Golfers to Open 2010 Slate at Big Four Match-Play
Feb. 4, 2010
The University of Northern Iowa men’s golf team will travel to Phoenix, Ariz., on Sat., Feb. 6, to open the 2010 season at the Big Four Match-Play Tournament. The tournament will feature all four Division I universities in the state of Iowa – UNI, Iowa State, Iowa and Drake – as they square off at Lone Tree Golf Club.
The Panthers will open competition on Saturday morning against the Iowa State Cyclones. The other first round matchup will pit Iowa against Drake. The winners of the two first-round showdowns will meet later on Saturday for the tournament championship, while the two teams defeated in the first round will meet for third place.
Expected to compete for UNI are seniors Kyle Bermel, Troy Hoffman, Tyler Johnson and Mason Linn, junior Jared Doerfler, sophomore Matt Sargent and freshman Yarri Bryn.
Each school will field a team of seven golfers for the match play event. One team point will be awarded for each match victory, and a half-point will be awarded for matches that end in a tie. Tiebreakers will be decided by the cumulative team scores for the round.
