Apr. 27-28 -- State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship
Cape Girardeau, Mo. -- Dalhousie Golf Club (Par 72 -- 7,080 yards)

 

The University of Northern Iowa men’s golf team heads to the State Farm MVC Championship (Apr. 27-28), hosted by Southern Illinois University at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Teams will play 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

TEEING OFF

• UNI was picked to finish sixth in the 2009 MVC pre-championship poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Illinois State received five first place votes and 77 total points and was the projected champion. Wichita State was right behind the Redbirds, receiving the other four first place votes and 76 total points. Southern Illinois was picked third with 60 points, followed by Drake with 55 points and Missouri State with 40. UNI received 33 points for its sixth-place projection, followed by Evansville (31), Creighton (20) and Bradley (9).

• The Panthers tied for sixth at last year’s State Farm MVC Championship, held at Davenport Country Club in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. UNI seniors Jordan Weber and Andy White each earned all-conference honors.

• UNI’s top individual player entering the Valley tournament is junior Tyler Johnson, as he ranks 14th in the conference with a 75.06 stroke average. Fellow junior Troy Hoffman ranks 28th in the MVC with a 76.09 stroke average.

• The Panthers are coming off a 13th-place finish at the UMB Bank/Tiger Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo., Apr. 13-14. Hoffman fired an even-par 72 in the second round, tying for his best 18-hole score of the season.
