Iowa City, Iowa - Although traveling light, the men's track and field team got their 2005 season off to a successful start this Saturday (Jan. 15) in Iowa City. Panther head coach Chris Bucknam and his staff chose to travel only the field athletes, hurdlers and the 4x400 meter relay teams to participate in the Hawkeye Open.

Senior Jon Drury (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) captured a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles to start off his final year as a Panther. Drury finished the race in 8.29. Freshman Raven Cepeda (Belolt Wis./Belolt Memorial) enjoyed success in the event, placing fifth in 8.71. Cepeda also captured a runner-up finish in the pole vault, clearing 14-11, and fourth place in the long jump (20-1).

Jarno Kivioja (Porvoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen Lukio) also brought home a win for UNI, clearing 16-10 3/4 in the pole vault, while sophomore John Anderson (Boone, Iowa/Boone) finished second in the high jump with 6-6 3/4.
