Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Panther track and field teams hosted their first-annual Mark Messersmith Invitational today, April 9, at the Mark Messersmith Outdoor Complex

The men's relay teams dominated the competition, finishing the day with three first-place finishes. The foursome of Ryan Kedley (Lowden, Iowa/North Cedar), Brent Dahlstrom (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada/Birchmount Park) and Dylan Davis (Adel, Iowa/Adel-DeSoto-Minburn) clocked in at 3:15.55 in the 4x400. Kedley, Cody Eichmeier (Ackely, Iowa/AGWSR), Patrick Hunter (Racine, Wis./Washington Park) and Dirk Homewood (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) finished the 4x200 meter relay in 1:25.69 and Kedley, Eichmeier, Homewood and Hunter finished the 4x100 with their 40.67 winning time.

In the field events, senior Derrick Benner (Paulina, Iowa/South O'Brien) regionally qualified in the men's hammer competition, finishing in fourth place for his 183-9 distance. In the pole vault, Andre Polajanec captured second, clearing 17- 3/4, with Jarno Kivioja (Porvoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen Lukio) following in third (17- 3/4, determined on missed heights).

Jon Drury (Clarion, Iowa/Clarion-Goldfield) finished in fourth place in the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.62. Sophomores Davis and Dahlstrom each took home second-place finishes on the day. Davis finished the 800 meters in 1:53.47 and Dahlstrom ran the 400 meters in 48.63. Hunter also captured second place, finishing the 100-meter dash in 10.47.
 

 

The Panthers will be back in action next weekend (April 15 and 16) in Knoxville, Tenn. to compete the Sea Ray Relays.
