Cedar Falls, Iowa - Senior Derrick Benner (Paulina, Iowa) won the hammer throw, setting a new University of Northern Iowa record in the process, to highlight day one of the 2005 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at Mark Messersmith Outdoor Complex.

Benner posted a mark of 202-5, bettering the previous school mark of 197-11 set by Allan Walz in 1996. Benner's previous personal best was 195-8 earlier this season. Four of Benner's six throws today were better than Walz' former UNI record. It also was Benner's first-ever Missouri Valley Conference championship.

UNI also had strong showings by a pair of women's runners in the 10,000 meters. Sophomore Quinn Vermie (Runnels, Iowa) and freshman Traci Hawley (Ames, Iowa) finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Vermie's time of 37:01.87 was the third-fastest in school history, while Hawley's clocking of 37:35.39 was the sixth-best in Panther annals.

Panther freshman Raven Cepeda (Beloit, Wis.) finished the first day of the decathlon in second place with 3,557 points. He trails first-day leader and defending MVC champion Paul Speer of Wichita State by 142 points heading into the final five events on Saturday.

Three events have been scored on both the men's and women's side, with UNI standing in fourth place in both sets of standings. The meet continues tomorrow with day two, with multi-events beginning at 9:00 a.m. Field events start at 2:00 p.m., with running events beginning at 3:30 p.m.
