Panthers Men in Third After Day Two of MVC Championships
May 14, 2005
Cedar Falls, Iowa - Wichita State leads both the men's and women's team standings after day two of the 2005 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The University of Northern Iowa stands in third place on the men's side and sixth place on the women's side. The Panthers had numerous top-flight performances on a blustery afternoon at Mark Messersmith Outdoor Complex - but none as head-turning as what junior Cody Eichmeier (Ackley, Iowa) accomplished. That Eichmeier won the long jump wasn't news in itself, as he owned the top distance in the MVC entering the meet, and leaped a school-record 25'0" to claim today's championship. The fact that we was on the track at all was the news - he had his appendix removed just one week ago in an emergency operation, but still managed to compete for the Panthers today. Eichmeier also qualified for tomorrow's 200 meter finals. Panther freshman Raven Cepeda (Beloit, Wis.) finished second in the decathlon. Cepeda shined in the pole vault, setting a personal best by clearing 16-6 ¾, which qualifies him for the NCAA regionals in that event. He also had a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 160-9, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the decathlon with 7,087 points. Junior Daniel Grandon (New Hartford, Iowa) finished third in the decathlon for the Panthers. UNI advanced a host of men's runners to tomorrow's finals. Among them were junior Patrick Hunter (Washington, Iowa) qualified in both the 100 and 200 meters, as did senior Jamie Goodwin (McKeesport, Ohio). Senior All-American Dirk Homewood (Cedar Falls, Iowa) posted the top times in both the 200 and 400 meters, and fellow senior Ryan Kedley (Lowden, Iowa) also advanced to the finals in both the 200 and 400. Adam Hinders (Waverly, Iowa) and Kyle Smith (Toronto, Canada) each advanced to the finals of the 800 meters.
Weather conditions were a challenge throughout the day, with temperatures in the 40's and winds gusting upwards of 35 miles per hour from the northwest. The meet concludes tomorrow (May 15), with field events scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and running events at 1:00 p.m. |
