Former Nebraska All-American Jose DeAnda is entering his 10th year as a Panther assistant coach. DeAnda was promoted to second assistant on Penrith's staff in 2003. His main responsibilities include training the lighter weights and recruiting. DeAnda took great pride in coaching Moza Fay to his first All-America honor in the 2007-08 season. Fay placed fifth at 165 pounds at the 2008 NCAA Championships. In 2009, Fay returned to the All-America stand, taking sixth place at the NCAA Championships. Fay also nabbed back-to-back Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Year honors. DeAnda went 28-9 at 141 pounds his senior year for the Huskers in 1998-99 and spent the 1999-00 season as a coach with the Husker Wrestling Club. He finished his collegiate career second in the Big 12 Championships and placing eighth at the NCAA Tournament. As the 10th seed at the national championships, DeAnda posted a 3-3 record in his first NCAA appearance. He also was named the team's most dedicated wrestler. "I always say that Jose is my utility man but he has become more than that. He gets involved with the guys personally and they feel able to talk to him about personal matters," Penrith said. "He's always working with them in the room and making sure they are doing the right things with their weight. The guys have great respect for Jose and that makes my job so much easier." A South Sioux City, Neb. native, DeAnda was ranked as high as sixth nationally. Penrith recruited DeAnda to Nebraska and coached him for three seasons in Lincoln while he was a Husker assistant coach. |
