ST.LOUIS, Mo.--The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team completed the second session at the NCAA Championships late this evening.  The attendance today at the Savvis Center was 15,409 for Session I and 15,931 for Session II.

 

Redshirt freshman Alex Dolly was the first Panther to step on the mat for Session II.  Dolly was sent to the 184-pound Wrestlebacks bracket after falling to Iowa's #8 Paul Bradley in the first round.  Paired up against Millersville's Mark Knock, Dolly kept his NCAA hopes alive, beating Knock 10-9.

 

Knock scored first early in the match and Dolly escaped soon after.  At 2:10 in the first period, Dolly scored a takedown and Knock escaped within seconds, tying the score at 3.  Dolly scored a takedown to take the lead late in the period and Knock escaped soon after, leaving the score at 5-4.  Knock chose down in the second period, escaped, and then got a takedown at 1:21.  Dolly escaped with 32 seconds remaining and the two went into the third period 7-6, Knock's lead.  Dolly fought back in the third period, getting an escape right away.  Knock got a takedown at 1:02, putting him up by two.  Dolly escaped with 51 seconds remaining, scored a takedown at :24 and held on for the win, 10-9.


 

 

Dolly was up against Shane Webster of Oregon in his third match of the day.  He was the only Panther who wrestled twice in the second session.  Webster is seeded ninth in the tournament at 184 and is a two-time NCAA qualifier, finishing sixth last year at 174 pounds.

Dolly got the first takedown of the match at 1:38 in the first period and Webster quickly got the escape.  Dolly led at the end of the first period 2-1.  Dolly started down in the second and got the only point scored in the period with an escape thirty seconds in.  Webster started down for the third period and got an escape right away.  Dolly held on for the rest of the period to take the 3-2 decision.

 

Jeff Harrison faced off against #10 Mark DiSalvo from Central Michigan in the second round of the 149 championship bracket.  The two went scoreless through the first period in a hard-fought battle.  Harrison started down in the second period and got an early.  DiSalvo took Harrison down at 1:10 and Harrison escaped at with 44 seconds remaining.  The third period with a 2-2 tie.  DiSalvo started down, got the escape and then a takedown with 30 seconds remaining.   Harrison battled till the end, getting an escape with nine seconds left.  DiSalvo took the win, 5-3.

Harrison and DiSalvo have had close matches against each other already this season.  At the UNI Open, DiSalvo got the W by a 3-2 decision.  At the national duals, Harrison got DiSalvo back and won by decision, 3-2.

 

Chris Bitetto paired up against Citadel's Travis Piccard in the second round of the 157 championship bracket.  Action started early with a takedown by Piccard.  Bitetto escaped at 2:32.  Piccard got another takedown at 1:33 and Bitetto escaped right away.  The second period started with a 4-2 lead for Piccard.  In the closing seconds of the match, with Piccard up by two, Bitetto scored a takedown with 13 seconds remaining to tie it up at 5.  The two went into overtime, Piccard executed 27 seconds in and took the 7-5 decision over Bitetto.

 

Eric Hauan, ranked #9 at 174 pounds, faced off with #8 Travis Frick of Lehigh.  In a match marked by extensive bleeding in two different parts of his nose on the part of Frick, Hauan came out on top 3-1.  Frick led after the second period 1-0 but Hauan came back in the third period to get an escape and then a takedown with 14 second remaining.

 

Sean Stender was paired up against #12 seed Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan.  Stender, seeded fifth, scored the first takedown at 1:28 in the first period, Michalak escaped at 1:21.  With the score at 2-1 at Stender's advantage, Michalak started down, got at escape and tied the score at 2 going into the third period.  Michalak cranked Stender around in the third period and got a two-point nearfall, putting him up by two.  Stender wrestled hard and got an escape with 47 seconds remaining and scored a takedown with only 15 seconds left on the clock to win by decision, 5-4. 

 

Chris Helgeson wrestled Wisconsin's Collin Cudd in his first wrestleback match at 125 pounds.  Helgeson scored a takedown in the first and again in the second period.  Cudd escaped in the second period bringing the score to a 4-1 Helgeson lead.  The third period started with Helgeson down, getting an escape right away.  In the closing second of the match, Cudd fought back hard getting an escape and a takedown but it wasn't enough.  Helgeson prevailed, winning by an 8-4 decision.

 

C.J. Ettelson took on Charlie Pinto of Maryland in his first wrestleback match at 141.  Pinto scored the first takedown with just over a minute left in the first period.   Ettelson escaped at :55.  The second period started 2-1, Pinto up.  He scored a takedown at 1:35, the second period closed with Pinto leading 4-1.  Pinto chose down to start the third period.  Ettelson worked off riding time throughout the period but couldn't get the points, falling to Pinto by decision, 4-1.  This match marks the conclusion of Ettelson's first season with the Panthers.

 

Nick Baima started his trip through the 165-pound wrestleback bracket against Craig Dziewiatkowski of Navy.  The two battled back and forth throughout the first period, Baima led at the close, 5-3.  Baima chose down in the second period and got an escape at 1:38.  The third period started 6-3, Dziewiatkowski was down to begin and got an escape early.  That was the last point to be scored as Baima went on to win by decision, 6-4.
