Panthers Top Eastern Michigan, Fall to Purdue, Stanford

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team finished the day with a dual record of 1-2 Saturday at the Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill. The Panthers opened the day with a 22-12 win over Eastern Michigan before falling to Purdue 24-9 and Stanford 19-12.
“Today was great competition for our guys,” UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. “We’re really still trying to figure out our lineup. We tried some different lineups today, now we just need to make some adjustments. As far as the wrestling went, our mat awareness was lacking today, we’ll need to really work on that in practice.”
vs. Eastern Michigan Despite being down 12-3 early in the match the Panthers came thundering back to take a 22-12 dual win over Eastern Michigan in the first dual of the day.
EMU’s David Wade gave the Eagles an early 3-0 lead with a 1-0 decision over Panther heavyweight Christian Brantley. Caleb Flores knotted the score at 3-3 in the next match with a 7-2 decision over Chris Jenkins at 125 pounds.
Ryan Jauch suffered a 5-3 overtime defeat against Andrew Novak at 133 pounds while EMU’s Corey Phillips notched a 13-11 decision over Trent Washington at 141 pounds. J.J. Johnson scored a 4-2 win over Jamal Lawrence at 149 pounds to give the Eagles a 12-3 lead halfway through the meet.
The Panthers would come thundering back however, winning the last five matches of the dual. Tyson Reiner kicked off the comeback for UNI with a 9-4 win over Aaron Sulzer. Redshirt freshman David Bonin secured an 8-5 decision over Justin Brandel.
Jarion Beets gave the Panthers a one point lead with a 15-7 major decision over Alex Ortman at 174 pounds. The Panthers would never relinquish their lead as Andy O’Loughlin then secured a 1-0 win over Nick Hendrick at 184 pounds to give the Panthers a 16-12 cushion heading into the final match. Dustin Bauman then secured the Panther victory with a pin over the Eagles Josh Lewis in 4:58.
UNI Dual Results vs Eastern Michigan HWT: Wade (EMU) dec. Brantley (UNI), 1-0 (EMU 3, UNI 0)
vs. Purdue In the second dual of the day the Panthers fell 24-9 to Purdue. UNI got wins from Brantley (hwt.), Charlie Ettelson (149 lbs.) and Bonin (165 lbs).
Brantley opened the dual with an 8-2 decision over Adam Walls at the heavyweight slot to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Purdue’s Cashe Quiroga notched a 5-4 win over Flores at 125 pounds followed by a 4-1 Boilermaker decision over Jauch at 133 pounds. Juan Archuleta captured an 8-4 win over Alec Hoffman at 141 pounds to give Purdue a 9-3 lead.
Charlie Ettelson scored a 3-2 decision over Sam Patacsil at 149 pounds to pull the Panthers within 9-6. But No. 11-ranked Colton Salazar notched a pin over Tyson Reiner at 157 pounds to extend the Purdue lead to 15-6.
Bonin pulled the Panthers within 15-9 with a 5-1 decision over Jason Martin at 165 pounds, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as the Boilermakers won the final three matches to take the 24-9 dual win.
UNI Dual Results vs Purdue HWT: Brantley (UNI) dec. Walls (PUR), 8-2 (UNI 3, PUR 0)
vs. Stanford Brantley opened the third dual of the day with his second win, a 3-1 decision over Dylan Rush. Brantley finished the day with a 2-1 record.
Stanford recorded wins at 125 and 133 pounds to take a 6-3 lead before Washington secured a 10-5 decision over Bret Baumbach at 141 pounds to knot the score at 6-6.
Mike Kent won a 14-8 decision over Lawrence at 149-pounds to give Stanford a three point lead. But UNI knotted the score again as Reiner secured a 10-5 decision over Lucas Espericueta at 157 pounds.
Stanford would win the next three matches to take a 19-9 lead, but Bauman added three points for the Panthers in the final match with a 3-1 decision over Richard Kessler to bring the final score to 19-12.

The Panthers (1-2) return to action next weekend, heading the Sprawl and Brawl in Binghamton, NY. The Panthers will face Harvard, Michigan State and Rutgers in three dual meets.
