University of Northern Iowa junior wrestler Andrew Anderson placed among the top six for the third straight season at the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Ill. Anderson placed sixth in the two-day tournament after coming in as the No. 8 seeded-wrestler in the
197-pound bracket.
Anderson, who placed fifth in 2005 and sixth in 2006, notched a sixth-place finish on Sunday as he posted a mark of 3-3 in the tournament. On Sunday, Anderson scored wins over Luther's Alec Bonander, 8-5, and No. 5-seeded Matt Koz (Chattanooga), 6-1. Anderson dropped a 7-2 decision to Central Michigan's Wynn Michalek in the consolation semifinal to fall into the fifth/sixth-place match.
The Sioux City, Iowa, native then took on No. 6-seeded David Bertolino (Iowa State) in the fifth-place match. Earlier this season Bertolino had scored a fall over Anderson in the teams' dual meeting on Dec. 16 in the McLeod Center.
On Sunday, Bertolino was able to score a 9-4 win over Anderson to take the fifth-place match. Anderson trailed early but knotted the match at 4-4 midway through the second period. However, Bertolino countered quickly with a reverse and added a takedown midway through the third period to clinch the match. Bertolino added a riding time point for the 9-4 decision.
