            WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team was unable to overcome a 22-3 run by Wichita State to end the first half and start the second in a 64-53 loss to the Shockers Sunday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

            Nicole Clausen led UNI (3-9, 1-1) with 13 points, and K.K. Armstrong and Kim Wypiszynski added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Erin Brocka led the Panthers with 10 rebounds.

            Daria Frazier led WSU (9-4, 1-1) with 19 points, and Marisah Henderson added 15. Marcy Sudbeck and Frazier each finished with 11 rebounds.

            The Panthers scored on their first five possessions to build an early 12-2 lead, led by seven points from Kim Wypiszynski in the game’s first 2:30.


 

 

            WSU scored the next four points, but the Panthers responded with a 10-1 run that gave UNI a 20-7 lead with 9:36 left in the half.

            Wichita State used a pair of free throws from Marisah Henderson and a three from Jacie Hoyt cut the Panther advantage to eight. Nicole Clausen hit a layup and a free throw to extend UNI’s lead back to double digits, 23-12 with 6:03 left in the half.

            The Shockers rattled off a 12-1 run over the next 3:13 to tie the game at 24 with 2:35 left in the half. UNI committed a pair of turnovers on their next two trips, and the Shockers scored on their next two possessions to take a 28-24 lead with 1:30 on the clock.

            K.K. Armstrong made a pair of free throws to send UNI into the break trailing 28-26.

            WSU scored the first six points of the second half to extend its lead to 34-26 with 17:46 remaining. Lizzie Boeck scored from the block to end the WSU run, and Clausen scored as she was fouled. Her free throw pulled UNI within three, 34-31, but Daria Frazier hit a jumper at the elbow and Henderson knocked down a three and a layup to make it a 41-31 game with 14:51 to play.  

            Wypiszynski scored on the block to cut the Panther deficit to single digits, but Henderson scored on a layup at the other end to keep the Shockers in front by 10.

            With UNI trailing 49-37, Katelin Oney and Boeck each made three free throws to pull the Panthers within six, 49-43 with 6:19 to play.

            Henderson scored to put the Shockers back in front by eight, but three free throws from Armstrong made it a 51-46 contest with 2:59 to play.

            Henderson hit a short jumper, and Shantel Pointer connected on a three from the baseline to give WSU a 56-46 advantage. Armstrong made a pair of free throws, but Marcy Sudbeck matched her at the other end to keep the WSU lead at 10, 58-48.

            Rachel Madrigal hit a three with 1:16 left to cut the Shocker lead to 58-51, but the Panthers were unable to get any closer on the way to the loss.

            UNI shot 13-of-54 (24.1 percent) from the floor, and the Panthers were 3-of-20 (15 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 24-of-31 (77.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

            The Shockers were 21-of-51 (41.2 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from behind the arc. WSU was 19-of-27 (70.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

            WSU held a 43-36 advantage on the boards.

            UNI returns to action on Friday when it hosts Evansville at 7:05 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
