Panthers Fall 72-70 at Missouri State
Jan. 19, 2007 Springfield, Mo. - The Four Panthers scored in double figures. In addition to Larsen, Tara King finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jessie Biggs and Megan Keefe each scored 13 points, and Biggs finished with six rebounds and five assists. Breton Wyett came off the bench to lead The Panthers (9-8, 3-3) held the Lady Bears scoreless through the first four minutes, running to an early 8-0 lead. Breton Wyett put MSU (6-9, 2-4) on the board with 15:20 left in the first half, tallying two of the eight points she would score over the next four minutes to help pull the Lady Bears to within three, 13-10 with 9:30 on the clock. Two minutes later Tiff Telwerp hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 13 with 7:38 remaining.
Ashley Lord scored on back to back trips to cap a 13-0 run by MSU and put the Lady Bears on top, 17-13 at the six-minute mark. Biggs took the ball the length of the floor to score and trim the Panther deficit to two, then Keefe hit one of two free-throw attempts to pull UNI within one, 17-16 with 4:01 left in the half. The Lady Bears were able to stretch their lead back to four, but a three from Biggs brought UNI back within one, 23-22 with 1:55 on the clock. Melissa Busby answered with a three for MSU to put the Lady Bears back up by four, 26-22 with just under a minute remaining. A free throw from Biggs cut the Lady Bear lead to three, then Larsen hit a jump shot with 20 seconds remaining to send the Panthers into the locker room trailing, 26-25. Nicole Clausen opened the second half with a three to return the lead to UNI, 28-26. A layup from King on UNI's next possession put the Panthers up by four, 30-26 with 18:45 left to play. Larsen scored on a layup to cap a 7-0 run by the Panthers that put UNI up 32-26. Wyett and Keefe traded jump shots on opposite ends to keep the Panther lead at six, then Wyett completed a three-point play with a layup and free throw to pull MSU within three, 32-29 with 17:08 remaining. With the Lady Bears down by three, Busby connected from behind the arc to tie the game at 40 with 13:47 remaining. King scored to put UNI back up by two, but a pair of free throws from Balerio knotted the game once again, 42-42 with 13:21 to play. Biggs hit a three from six feet behind the arc as the shot clock expired to return the lead to UNI, 45-42. The lead was short-lived, as Wyett was fouled as she scored. The free throw tied the game at 45, then MSU went up by two, 47-45, on another layup from Wyett. Clausen returned the lead to UNI with a three from the left baseline that put the Panthers on top 48-47 with 11:35 to play. MSU scored the next five points on a three from Busby and a basket from Wyett, building a 52-48 advantage. A basket from Larsen pulled UNI within two, but Balerio connected from the top of the key to give the Lady Bears a five-point advantage, 55-50 with 9:55 to play. Still holding a five-point lead, Balerio put the Lady Bears up 64-47 with a layup at 6:25. King hit a pair of free throws and Keefe scored on a layup to make it a one-possession game, 64-61 with 5:50 to play. Terwelp connected on a pair of free throws to stretch the Lady Bear advantage to five, 66-61, but Larsen answered with a three for the Panthers that pulled UNI within two, 66-64 with 3:50 to play. The Panthers were held scoreless over the next two minutes, and MSU used a reverse layup from Wyett and a pair of free throws from Roxanne Stiles to build a 70-64 lead with 2:07 to play. King knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:48 to play to bring UNI within four, 70-66. After a trap by Biggs and Larsen forced an MSU turnover, Biggs scored on a layup to cut the Panther deficit to two, 70-68 with 1:33 on the clock. Terwelp was fouled under the MSU basket, and she hit both free throws to make it a four-point Lady Bear lead, 72-68 with just 1:07 to play. A layup from Larsen pulled UNI back within two at the one-minute mark. Stiles shot with 30 seconds left and Larsen grabbed the defensive rebound. King's game-tying layup with five seconds left fell short, and Taylor Silas was fouled as she grabbed the rebound. She missed the front end of the one-and-one, and UNI grabbed the rebound with two seconds left. Larsen's desperation three hit the front of the rim. The Panthers shot 27-of-50 (54 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
