Defense Carries UNI to 13th VictoryFeb. 5, 2005
Another strong defensive effort turned into another Missouri Valley Conference victory tonight for the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team as the Panthers defeated Bradley 60-49 in the West Gym in front of 1,809 fans. Senior forward Alex Cook led all players with 20 points and 14 rebounds finishingwith her fourth consecutive double-double, her eighth of the season.Senior guard Emily Berry added 12 points and junior center Cassie Hager chipped in 11 points and four blocks for UNI. Dena Williams led Bradley with 14 points and Erika Nelson scored 13. UNI put on the defensive clamps in the first half allowing Bradley just 15 points in the first 20 minutes of play. The Braves came into the game averaging 73.4 points. Cook posted 14 points and six rebounds as the Panthers hit 11-of-26 shots from the field (42.3 percent) while the Braves hit only six-of-23 (26.1 percent). The Panthers opened up the second half with a 13-4 run to give them an 18-point lead. It was their largest lead of the game (37-19) with 14:35 left in regulation. Bradley battled back to pull within nine points (53-44) with 1:19 remaining in the game but the Panthers knocked down their free throws in the final minute to seal the deal. Both teams heated up in the second half, with UNI edging BU 36-34. The Panthers connected on eight-of 18 shots from the field (44.4 percent) and four-of-seven from downtown (57.1 percent), with Berry hitting three treys. UNI improves to 13-8 overall and 7-3 in MVC play. Bradley drops to 11-8 overall and 4-6 in league play. The Panthers are home for two games next weekend. Southern Illinois comes to town Thursday (Feb. 10) for a 7:05 contest and Evansville visits the West Gym on Saturday (Feb. 12) with tip-off slated for 4:05 p.m.
