Panthers Light Up Salukis, 72-43
Feb. 10, 2005
Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball squad improved their status in the Missouri Valley Conference with a lopsided win over Southern Illinois, 72-43 in the West Gym. Senior forward Alex Cook led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds on the night. Sophomore guard Jessie Biggs contributed 10 points with two-for-three shooting behind the three point arc. Daphney Desamours who had eight of her 12 points in the second half led the Salukis scorers. The Panther defense would again be the back breaker for another opponent as they held the Salukis to 22 first half points on 29.2 percent shooting. UNI forced 13 turnovers that resulted in 22 points for Panther shooters. Cook bullied her way to 12 points and a perfect six-for-six from the charity strip to help build the Panther lead 38-22 at the half. The Panthers opened up the second half with an eight-of-two run to push the lead to 22. SIU would not respond fast enough as the Panthers continued to light up the scoreboard. UNI shot 47.1 percent from the field along with 5-of-12 from downtown. UNI was also productive inside, outrebounding the SIU 39-25 on the night. UNI climbs to 14-8 overall and 8-3 in MVC play. Southern Illinois falls to 3-18 overall and 1-11 in league play. The Panthers take a three-game winning streak into the West Gym Saturday against Evansville with tip-off at 2:05.
