Panthers Extend Win Streak To Four Games With 47-44 Victory Over EvansvilleFeb. 12, 2005
Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team faced off with the Evansville Purple Aces on Saturday, Feb. 12 in the West Gym. UNI revenged a 64-61 loss in Evansville on Jan. 16. The Panthers have won four consecutive and are 9-2 in the West Gym this season. Senior Alex Cook led UNI with 13 points and eight rebounds to a 47-44 victory over the Evansville Aces. UNI improves to 15-8, 9-3 and currently sits at third place in the MVC. The Panthers held the Aces to their lowest scoring performance of the season. Ace Jennifer Utterback led all scorers with 16 while Panther Jessie Biggs added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Biggs scored the first points for the Panthers with a drive inside but then UNI hit a scoring wall, trailing the Aces 10-2 at the 15-minute mark. UNI went on a 10-0 streak to come within one point halfway through the first. It got baskets inside from Alex Cook, Tara King, Emily Berry and Amanda Faas during the drive. Evansville's Sarah Hyslop and Megan Liffick hit back-to-back shots to take a six-point lead at the seven-minute mark. Ottumwa (IA) native Biggs answered with a three from the right side of the key. UNI did not score in the final five minutes of the half and trailed Evansville 26-23 going into the break. UNI shot 30 percent in the first period while the Aces nailed 37.9 percent of their shots. Both teams grabbed 19 rebounds. The Panthers finally tied up the game with a jumper from Cook three minutes into the second half. The Panthers traded three-pointers with the Aces - Biggs nailing her second of the afternoon. Sarah Larsen would come off the bench to score six points, including a lay-up as she flew out-of-bounds. Center Cassie Hager gave UNI its first lead of the game (34-32) with a shot from the behind the arc - her ninth trey of the season.
The Panthers had a four-point 36-32 lead for the next four minutes as neither team could sink a basket. Evansville then took a 37-36 advantage with three made free throws and a lay-up. From then on the lead would switch six times. Senior Cook took a seat at the 1:46 mark, recording her fifth foul in a controversial call. The crowd was deafening in the final minute as 1,920 Panther fans stood to their feet. Ace Courtney Felke tied the game at 44-all with 38.3 seconds remaining with a three-pointer. Biggs would then hit three free throws in the final minute to seal the Panther victory. UNI travels to Illinois State and Indiana State next weekend and returns to the West Gym on Thursday, Feb. 24 to host the Drake Bulldogs. |
