University of Northern Iowa women's basketball fell to the Indiana State Sycamores 53-41 this afternoon at the Hulman Center.  Indiana State broke UNI's six-game win streak, while extending its own to 18 games and improving to 12-0 in conference play.

 

Senior center Cassie Hager led the Panthers with 11 points and junior guard Jessie Biggs added 10.  UNI was outrebounded 41-23 with the Sycamores grabbing 19 offensive boards. Neither team shot above 40 percent as UNI made 37.2 percent of its attempts from the field and ISU was limited to a conference-game low at 32.7 percent.  Senior guard Melanie Boeglin led the field with 28 points and 10 rebounds.

 

The Panthers took a 26-22 lead into halftime, shooting 45.8 percent (11-of-24) to the Sycamores' 26.7 field goal percentage (8-of-30) in the first half.  The lead changed four times and there were five ties in the first stanza.  The Panthers went up by as many as six on a Hager three-pointer with 9:23 remaining in the first half.    Junior forward Rachel Maenpaa tied the game at 20-20 with 4:02 remaining and then UNI ended the half with a 6-2 run. 


 

 

 

The Panthers held the lead until 12:22 remained in the game when senior guard Stephanie Lisch hit back-to-back shots to give the home team a 33-32 advantage.   Junior guard Sarah Larsen tied it up at 35-all with a three-pointer and then ISU took the lead and kept it on a Lisch free throw.  The Sycamores ended the game with an 11-4 run as Boeglin hit a trey and six consecutive shots from the charity stripe.

 

ISU improves to 20-2, 12-0 in the MVC.  UNI is now 15-7, 9-4 in the Valley and tied for second place in the Valley with Evansville. The Panthers play at Bradley Friday, Feb. 17th.
