CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- -

Despite shooting just 20.7 percent in the second half, the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team was able to escape with a 53-49 win over Wichita State, the Panthers' 17th straight win over the Shockers. Tara King led UNI (14-11, 8-6) with 14 points, Sarah Larsen added 12 and Traci Ollendieck put in 11.

Kiki Stephens led WSU (9-14, 4-9) with 13 points, and Antioneete Wells scored 10 points while grabbing 11 rebounds.

Neither team held more than a four-point lead, and there were eight lead changes through the first 16 minutes of the first half. Trailing 18-17, UNI sandwiched a layup by Jessie Biggs with threes from Lindsey Swanson and Ollendieck to go on an 8-0 run and take a 25-18 lead at 2:14.

Wichita State trimmed the Panther advantage to four with a jump shot with 46 seconds left. Just 11 seconds later Larsen was fouled as she made a layup, and the free throw put UNI in front 29-22.  Ollendieck came up with a steal then knocked down a baseline jump shot at the buzzer to send UNI into the locker room leading 31-22.

Biggs gave the Panthers a 10-point lead when her three-point basket made the score 34-24 with 17:51 to play. The Shockers then took advantage of a Panther cold spell, going on an 11-0 run over the next 5:30 to take a 35-34 lead. A layup from Megan Keefe ended a string of nine straight missed shots for the Panthers and put UNI back in the lead, 36-35 at 11:55.

Wells put WSU back in the lead with a layup, but Swanson connected on a free throw to tie the game at 37-37 with 11:29 remaining.

The Shockers went back in front on a jump shot from Kristen Donnell, and a three from Kyrie Kinder gave WSU its largest lead of the game, 42-37 with 8:49 remaining.

Danielle Wubbens hit one of two free throws to pull UNI within four, then King made it a one-point game when she completed a three-point play at 5:53, making the score 42-41. Larsen grabbed a rebound at the defensive end, and then scored a layup to put the Panthers back in the lead, 43-42.

Kinder tied the game for the third time with a free throw at 4:44. King hit a pair of free throws, then Ollendieck connected on her third three of the game to give UNI a 48-45 edge with 3:51 on the clock.

Stephens hit a jump shot then a pair of free throws to trim the UNI lead to one, 48-47. On the Panther end of the floor, Nicole Clausen saved a Panther miss from going out of bounds, and Larsen tracked down Clausen's save near mid-court. Wubbens found King behind the arc, and the senior knocked down a three at 1:40 to stretch UNI's advantage to four, 51-47.

Once again, Stephens brought the Shockers within striking distance when she hit a jump shot at 1:25 that made the score 51-49. Wichita State had a chance to tie the game, taking a shot with 22 seconds left, but the Panthers came up with the defensive rebound. WSU elected to foul, and King connected on a pair of free throws with 18.1 seconds left to seal the win for UNI.
