CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -

After a slow start, the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team was able to get its offense going and run to a 62-35 win over Detroit Friday night in the McLeod Center. Freshmen Jacqui Kalin and Lizzie Boeck led UNI with 16 points each, representing career highs for both. Detroit's 35 points are the fewest scored by a UNI opponent this season.

Erin Brocka finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Traci Ollendieck led UNI with 10 rebounds to go with eight points. Chancia Hall led the Titans with seven points.

Both teams struggled offensively through the first eight minutes, and the teams stood knotted at 6-6 at the 12-minute mark. UNI (4-2) scored on five of six possessions to kick-start its offense and build a 17-9 lead with eight minutes left in the half. The Titans (0-5) cut UNI's lead to four, 17-13, but a three from Ollendieck gave UNI a seven-point edge.

An old-fashioned three-point play from Hall trimmed the Panther lead to four once again, 20-16 with 5:40 on the clock. The Panthers outscored the Titans 10-2 through the rest of the half to take a 30-18 advantage into the lockerroom.

UNI kept rolling to start the second half, outscoring the Titans 11-3 through the first seven minutes of the period to build a 41-21 lead. Joyce Massey scored for Detroit with 12:56 remaining to cut the Panthers' lead to 18, 41-23. Kalin knocked down a three with 11:10 on the clock to push UNI's lead to 21, 44-23. That was the beginning of a 9-0 run by the Panthers that gave them a 50-23 lead with 9:25 to play.

UNI led by as many as 29 points and at least 21 the rest of the way.

"From day one, we've talked about how we don't strive for perfection, we strive for progression," UNI head coach Tanya Warren said. "The first 10 minutes weren't good. But, we picked it up and played better in the second 10 minutes and in the second half."

The Panthers shot 21-of-52 (40.4 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from three-point range. UNI was 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

Detroit was 13-of-59 (22.0 percent) from the floor, including 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from three-point range. The Titans were 7-of-12 (58.3 percent) from the free-throw line.

The Panthers committed 19 turnovers, 12 coming off Detroit steals. Detroit turned the ball over 16 times. UNI outrebounded Detroit 47-35.

The win is the Panthers' second straight, giving UNI some momentum heading into a five-game road swing through the month of December that starts with a trip to No. 3 Maryland on Dec. 7.
