CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Senior Tara King notched her first double-double of the season, dropping in 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to help the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team defeat Illinois-Chicago, 66-50 in the McLeod Center Sunday night.

            Junior Megan Keefe also scored in double figures for UNI, adding 11 points and grabbing six rebounds.

            Krystal Hugelier led UIC (3-4) with nine points. Nikki Grobbecker finished with eight points and nine rebounds for the Flames.

            Trailing 10-8 five minutes into the game, UNI (2-5) went on an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to build a 26-12 lead with nine minutes left in the first half. Six different Panthers scored during that span.

            UNI continued to build on its lead, and took its largest lead of the half on a free throw from Sarah Larsen that gave the Panthers the 35-17 edge with two minutes remaining. The Flames held the Panthers scoreless through the rest of the period, and UIC scored the final six points of the half to make the score 35-23 at the break.


 

 

            The Flames trimmed UNI's lead to 10 early in the second half, 37-27 at 17:59. The Panthers answered with a 7-0 run that stretched their lead to 17, 44-27 with 14:51 to play. UNI led by at least 13 points through the rest of the game, and they led by as many as 18 on the way to the win.

            "We're progressing. We know the things we need to work on, and we're working on them," UNI head coach Tony DiCecco said. "We've been working hard on some things, and I think we are progressing in those areas."

            The Panthers shot a season-high 41.7 percent (20-48) from the floor in the game, including 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) from the free-throw line, marking the Panthers' best free-throw percentage of the year.

            The Flames took 17 more shots than the Panthers, and connected on one more field goal, shooting 21-of-65 (32.3 percent) from the floor. The Flames were 1-of-10 (10 percent) from behind the arc, and 7-of-14 (50 percent) from the free-throw line.

            UIC held the rebounding advantage, 45-35.

            The Panthers stay home for their next contest, hosting No. 1 Maryland in the McLeod Center on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
