BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team hit a school record 17 threes but fell just short, losing 74-72 at UMBC on Sunday afternoon. After falling behind by 10 in the first half, the Panthers rallied to take an eight-point lead in the second period but were unable to hold on for the win.

            Nicole Clausen and Traci Ollendieck each hit six threes to finish with 18 points apiece. Jacqui Kalin contributed 13 points, and Erin Brocka finished just short of a double-double, posting 10 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

            The Panthers shot 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the floor, including 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) from three-point range. UNI (4-4) was 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) from the free-throw line.

            UMBC (4-6) was 24-of-54 (44.4 percent) from the floor, including 12-of-27 (44.4 percent) from three-point range. The Retrievers were 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the charity stripe.They were led by Carlee Cassidy, who scored 25 points, 15 coming from behind the arc and 13 coming in the game's final six minutes.


 

 

            Kristin Drabyn drained two quick threes to give UMBC an early 6-0 lead. Nicole Clausen put the Panthers on the board with a three from the right wing, cutting the Retriever lead in half.

            Michele Brokans connected from behind the arc to put the UMBC lead back to six, but Clausen and Traci Ollendieck both hit from long range to tie the game at 9-9 with 15:16 left in the first half.

            Clausen followed a basket by Chantay Frazier with her third three of the game, giving UNI its first lead of the game, 12-11 with 12:42 on the clock.

            UMBC scored the next four points to reclaim the lead, but Erin Brocka tied the game at 15 with a three at 9:42.

            The Retrievers built five-point leads twice over the next three minutes. Jacqui Kalin hit a three at 6:04 to tie the game at 23-23. UMBC scored the next six points, but a three from Ollendieck cut that lead in half with 4:03 on the clock.

            UMBC used a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to build a 10-point lead, 36-26. After a Retriever turnover, UNI got the ball at half court with 2.1 seconds on the clock. Kalin's three from just across the half court line fell at the buzzer, sending UNI into the locker room trailing, 36-29.

            The Panthers were 10-of-25 from the floor in the first half, with nine of those field goals coming from three-point range, where UNI shot 60 percent (9-of-15) through the first 20 minutes.

            Lizzie Boeck scored four quick points, and Kalin hit a baseline jumper to cut the UMBC lead to 36-35 with 17 minutes remaining. Drabyn hit one of two free throws to give the Retrievers a 37-35 advantage. Alexa Mennen connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game, 37-37.

            A layup by Carlee Cassidy put the Retrievers back in front, 39-37, but Ollendieck hit her third three of the game to give UNI a 40-39 lead with 14:34 to play.

            Cassidy scored to put UMBC back in front, but Mennen scored twice and Clausen hit her fifth three of the game to send the Panthers on a 7-0 run and give UNI a 47-41 lead with 12:21 remaining.

            UNI stretched its lead to eight, 53-45 at the 10-minute mark, but the Retrievers outscored the Panthers 10-3 over the next five minutes to climb within one, 56-55.

            Brocka hit one of two free throws to give UNI a two-point edge, but Frazier scored on the next possession for UMBC to tie the game at 57-57 with four minutes remaining.

            Cassidy hit a three to put UMBC in front, but Ollendieck matched her with a deep three that tied the game at 60-60 with 3:20. Cassidy drained a three from the left baseline, and then scored on a layup to give UMBC a 65-60 advantage with 2:19 to play.

            Ollendieck hit her fifth three of the game with 1:26 on the clock to pull the Panthers within two, 65-63.

            Cassidy gave the Retrievers a five-point edge with a three as the shot clock expired with just under a minute remaining.

            Ollendieck made her career-high sixth three off a screen by Brocka to keep the Panthers within two, 68-66 with 35 seconds to play. UMBC's Chrissy Robinson made it a two-possession game when she hit a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining.

            Kalin drove the length of the floor for a layup that pulled the Panthers within two, 70-68 with 23 seconds remaining.

            Drabyn connected on a pair of free throws to stretch the Retriever lead back to four. Boeck hit one of two free-throw attempts to make it a three-point game with 11 seconds remaining. Drabyn hit both her free throws to make it a five-point game. Clausen hit her sixth three of the game at the buzzer, but it was too little too late for UNI.

The Panthers return to action on Dec. 18 when they play at intra-state foe Iowa State.
