Panthers Win Fifth StraightDec. 11, 2005
Fort Wayne, Ind. - University of Northern Iowa women's basketball defeated IPFW Sunday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum 62-52. The Panthers shot 50 percent from behind the arc, tying a UNI game record with 11 three-pointers. The last time UNI had nine treys was at Bradley during the 2002-03 season. Sophomore guard Kelly Lund (New Brighton, Minn.) led the Panthers with 17 points, a career-best. She went 3-for-3 from three-point range, also a career-high, and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Traci Ollendieck (Creso, Iowa) was 4-for-7 from three-point range and had 12 total points. Junior forward Tara King (Ottumwa, Iowa) had a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior center Cassie Hager (Perry, Iowa) added five blocks. Junior guard Ashley Johnson led the Mastodons with 13 points. UNI outrebounded the Mastodons 42-34 and shot 39.7 field goal percent to IPFW's 28.3 percent. UNI took leads of 8-2 and 10-14 in the first 10 minutes of the game and then got hot, making 7-of-9 three-pointers in the final half of the first period. Five Panthers had a trey in the first half as UNI took a 42-21 lead into the break. The Panthers help on to their 20-point advantage until the final five minutes. Then, IPFW ended the game with a 10-0 run. The Panthers improve to 5-1 while IPFW is now 1-5. The Panthers next contest is Saturday, Dec. 17 against Iowa State at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. The game is the first women's basketball event to take place in the new arena.
