CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -

            The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team shot almost 53 percent from the floor to top Bradley 74-47 in its Missouri Valley Conference season opener in the McLeod Center on Friday. The win is the fifth straight for UNI (7-5, 1-0 MVC), and the fifth straight win for UNI in the series with Bradley. Nine different Panthers scored in the win, with Tara King leading the way with 17 points. Nicole Clausen finished with 12 points. Megan Keefe led UNI  with seven rebounds, and Sarah Larsen dished out a career-high 11 assists.

            Amy Peters led Bradley (4-8, 0-1 MVC) with 12 points, and Devyn Flanagan added 11.

            The Panthers scored on five straight possessions to build an 11-4 lead early in the first half. A free-throw from King stretched the Panther lead to nine, 15-6 with 15:04 on the clock.


 

 

            The Braves responded with the next four points to trim the UNI lead to five, 15-10 at 13:37, but UNI answered with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes that gave the Panthers a 15-point lead, 25-10 with 9:31 to play. The Panthers led by as many as 17 points through the rest of the half, and took a 34-21 lead into the break.

            Clausen scored the first five points of the second half to stretch UNI's lead to 18, 39-21 with 18:32 to play.

            A layup by Flanagan with 12:37 remaining trimmed the Braves' deficit to 13, 44-31, but the Panthers outscored Bradley 9-2 over the next three minutes to take a 20-point lead, 53-33 with 8:37 to play.

            The Panthers would go on to lead by as many as 28 points on the way to the win.

            UNI shot 28-of-53 (52.8 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the free-throw line.

            Bradley finished 19-of-61 (31.1 percent) from the floor, and the Braves shot 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from three-point range. The Braves were 7-of-10 (70 percent) from the free-throw line.

            The Panthers finished with a season-high nine blocked shots, led by Traci Ollendieck who had four. The Panthers had 22 assists in the win. Bradley held the rebounding advantage, 38-35.

            UNI will look to continue its win streak on Jan. 4 when it plays at Creighton in its first conference road game of the season.
