Late Rally Gives UNI 71-52 Win at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team outscored Evansville 26-8 in the game's final nine minutes to take a 71-52 win over the Aces in Missouri Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon in Roberts Stadium. The Panthers led just 45-44 with 9:10 on the clock, but UNI held UE to 0-14 shooting from the floor and just eight free throws through the rest of the game to take the win. Erin Brocka and K.K. Armstrong led the Panthers (10-12, 6-5 MVC) with 15 points each. Jacqui Kalin added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Danielle Wubbens finished with 11 points, nine of them scored in the first half. Amy Gallagher led the Aces with 14 points, and Samantha Heck added 13 points and seven rebounds for UE. Chelsea Falkenstein also collected seven rebounds for the Purple Aces. Trailing 15-10, Armstrong scored five straight points to tie the game, and Wubbens scored from the elbow to give UNI a 17-15 lead. Jordan Lewis made the game's first three to put Evansville back in font, 18-17, but Wubbens knocked down a long two to put UNI back in front, 19-18, with 7:27 left in the first half. UNI scored the next four points to build a 23-18 advantage with five minutes to play in the period. Gallagher scored out of the break to give UE a four-point advantage, but a three from Erin Brocka and a jumper from Jacqui Kalin on a fast break put the Panthers back in front, 32-31. The teams exchanged four-point runs to give the Panthers a 36-35 edge. The Aces responded with a 4-1 run that put them in front, 40-37. UNI rallied for six straight points, including a pair of baskets from Brocka, to take a 43-40 lead at 10:32. The UNI lead stayed between one and three points until Wubbens and Brocka scored on consecutive trips to bring the score to 51-45 in favor of the Panthers. Gallagher made the second of two free-throw tries to narrow the gap to five, but Armstrong drained threes on consecutive trips to give UNI a double-digit lead, 57-46 with 5:27 left. Chelsea Falkenstein and Kalin traded free throws, and Kalin took an errant Evansville pass the length of the floor for a layup that extended UNI's lead to 13, 61-48 with 4:20 remaining. The Panthers held UE to just four points the rest of the way, leading by as many as 21 points on the way to the win. UNI shot 26-of-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the free-throw line. The

rebounding advantage, including 11 offensive rebounds resulting in 10
second-chance points. The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Bradley at 3:07 p.m. |
