Women's Basketball Releases 2008-09 ScheduleAug. 25, 2008 CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Meetings with in-state rivals Iowa and Iowa State highlight the University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball schedule for 2008-09, announced on Monday. The Panthers’ schedule could include six meetings with teams who participated in the postseason in 2007-08. The Panthers could face four teams that earned places in the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08. Along with the Cyclones and Hawkeyes, the Panthers will face Illinois State, and could meet Sweet Sixteen team Louisville in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. WNIT participants Drake, Evansville and UW-Green Bay also appear on the 2008-09 slate. “Any time you play Iowa state and Iowa, and then you add all of the others, there is no doubt we will be challenged,” UNI head coach Tanya Warren said. “We are thrilled to have five non-conference games in front of our fans, including our home opener against Iowa State. We look forward to playing this very challenging non-conference schedule because we know it will better prepare us to compete for a conference championship.” The Panthers will open the 2008-09 campaign at North Dakota State on Nov. 14. UNI will host in-state foe Iowa State in its home opener on Nov. 20, and will take on Western Illinois at home on Nov. 25.
The Panthers play in the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev., on Nov. 28-29, playing host team Nevada in the first round. In the second round, UNI will meet up with either Louisville or Alabama. UNI hosts Northern Illinois and UW-Green Bay in a pair of non-conference games on Dec. 3 and 6 before heading out on a season-long three-game road trip. The Panthers open that swing at intrastate rival Iowa (Dec. 11) before playing at Colorado State (Dec. 12) and South Dakota (Dec. 21). The Panthers round out their non-conference slate with a game against South Dakota State on Dec. 29. The Panthers’ Missouri Valley Conference schedule includes home and away meetings with the league’s nine other schools, starting with a match-up at Missouri State on Jan. 2. UNI hosts Evansville in its first home MVC game on Jan. 8. The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a home game against the Lady Bears on March 7. UNI will compete for an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament in the MVC Tournament held March 12-15 in St. Charles, Mo. Times and television dates are still to be determined.
