Sun., Nov. 8   Winona State (Exh.)       McLeod Center

The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team will host Winona State in an exhibition contest on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game is a final tune-up for the Panthers, who open the season on Nov. 13 against North Dakota State.

The University of Northern Iowa women’s basketball team will have a wealth of experience at its disposal as it attempts to move from the middle of the pack to the top of the Missouri Valley Conference standings in 2009-10.

UNI brings back 13 letterwinners, all its starters and 96 percent of its offense from a team that finished 11-19 overall and 9-9 in league play last season. Leading that group is senior forward Kim Wypiszynski, who averaged 14.8 points per game in conference action to earn MVC Newcomer of the Year and honorable mention all-conference honors in 2009. UNI also brings back junior center Lizzie Boeck, who finished with 10.4 points per game in 2009. Senior guard Nicole Clausen returns as one of the top three-point shooters in the Valley, averaging two per contest a year ago and averaging 10.1 points per game.

Sophomore guards K.K. Armstrong and Katelin Oney return following freshmen campaigns that saw each player spending time in the starting lineup. Armstrong finished with 8.7 points per contest, and Oney averaged 4.2 for UNI. Danielle Wubbens returns to resume her role as a team captain. The senior sparkplug averaged 13 minutes per game for UNI a year ago.

Junior Erin Brocka comes back as a forward after a season where she scored 3.9 points and averaged 4.2 rebounds despite battling injuries. Senior Lindsey Swanson and sophomore Rachel Madrigal will both earn some minutes as guards. Each saw time in the starting lineup a year ago.

The Panthers also welcome back sophomore guard Jacqui Kalin, who sat out the 2008-09 season with an injury. Kalin led UNI with 13.3 points per game to be tabbed second-team all-conference and MVC Freshman of the Year in 2008. UNI will also add four freshmen to its roster in Amber Kirschbaum, Jessica McDowell, Mercedees Morgan and Tiffanie Porter.

The Panthers will be led by third-year head coach Tanya Warren.
