Women's Basketball Heads to Northern Illinois, Green Bay

The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team will look to remain on the winning track when it plays at Northern Illinois on Wednesday and Green Bay on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast by KWLO 1330 AM with Brad Wells providing play-by-play.
TIPPING OFF... The Panthers ended a four-game losing streak when it came from behind to top Butler on Saturday. UNI trailed 22-16 at the half after shooting a season-low 22.8 percent through the first 20 minutes. The Panthers rebounded with its best shooting half of the season, connecting on 17-of-25 (68 percent) second-half tries. Senior Kim Wypiszynski was 7-of-7 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line to score 20 points in the second half to lead the Panthers' comeback effort.
The Panthers trailed by six at halftime in both of their games in the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic, but the end results were very different. After going into the break down 29-23 against Louisville, the Panthers were outscored 52-30 in the second half to fall 81-53 to the Cardinals. Against Butler, UNI shot a season-high 68 percent from the floor in the second half to earn a 65-60 victory after trailing 22-16 at the break.
Kim Wypiszynski ranks eighth in the MVC in scoring, averaging 13.8 points per game. Her 53.5 shooting percentage ranks sixth in the league.
K.K. Armstrong ranks sixth in The Valley with 3.6 assists per game.
Nicole Clausen's 2.4 threes per game ranks No. 4 in the MVC. SCOUTING NORTHERN ILLINOIS The Huskies are 3-3 on the season after falling 78-67 to No. 15 DePaul on Saturday. Marke Freeman leads the team with 16.5 points per game, including a 26-point effort against the Blue Demons. Mauvolyene Adams averages 14.7 points per game, and Ebony Ellis averages a double-double, with 13 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. UNI will be the third MVC opponent for the Huskies, who posted an 86-73 win over Bradley in their season opener and topped Southern Illinois, 74-65, on Nov. 22. NIU is averaging 68.5 points per game, shooting 40.4 percent from the floor as a team. The Huskies outrebound their opponents by a margin of 42.3 to 35.8. This is the 13th meeting between the Huskies and Panthers, and the series is tied, 6-6. NIU won the last meeting, topping UNI, 58-46, on Dec. 3, 2008. The Panthers were held without a three in the game, marking the first time since 1999 that UNI had not connected from long range. UNI shot a season-low 22 percent in that contest. Jacqui Kalin led the Panthers with 13 points in the game. Adams scored 13 and Freeman added 11 for the Huskies.
SCOUTING GREEN BAY The Phoenix are 5-0 entering the week. Green Bay will host No. 15 DePaul on Wednesday before hosting UNI on Saturday. Kayla Tetschlag leads Green Bay with 13.0 points per game, and Celeste Hoewisch averages 11.6. Julie Wojta averages 10.0 points ad 6.2 rebounds per game. Hoewisch and Wojta lead the Phoenix with 3.8 assists per game. Four of UWGB's first five wins have come on the road, and the Pheonix enter the week with just one home contest under their belt. Green Bay is averaging 68.4 points per game, and the Pheonix shoot 44.0 percent from the floor. Conversely, they hold opponents to 52.0 points per contest and 38.4 percent shooting. Green Bay outrebounds its opponents by an average of 34.8 to 29.2. Green Bay leads the series with the Panthers, 5-2, including a 76-49 win at in the McLeod Center on Dec. 6, 2008. Four Pheonix scored in double figures in that game, led by a 16-point effort from Hoewisch. Nicole Clausen was 5-of-7 from three-point range in the game to lead the Panthers with 15 points.
JEKYLL AND HYDE The Panthers looked like two different teams against Butler. In the first half, UNI shot 5-of-22 from the floor (22.7 percent), its lowest shooting percentage in a half this season. The Panthers rebounded in the second half, however, shooting 17-of-25 (68 percent) from the floor, their best shooting percentage in a half this season.
FAMILIAR FACES UNI returns 13 letterwinners, all five starters and 96 percent of its offense from the 2008-09 team.One of the Panthers' returnees is 2009 Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year Kim Wypiszynski, who averaged 14.8 points per game in league play last year.
UNI PICKED FOURTH The Panthers were selected to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference by the league's coaches, sports information directors and media members. Creighton was picked to win the league, followed by Illinois State and Drake.
UNLUCKY 13 On November 13, The Panthers opened the season with a 64-62 loss against North Dakota State in the McLeod Center. The teams found themselves knotted in 13 ties, and the Panthers and Bison traded leads 13 times. It marks the first time UNI has lost its season opener under head coach Tanya Warren.
CLAUSEN FOR THREE Senior Nicole Clausen enters the season looking to become UNI's all-time three-point field goal leader. Clausen has 162 threes to her credit, 40 shy of the record set by Nadine Brandt from 1998-02.
GET TO SIXTY Sixty has been the magic number for the Panthers under third-year head coach Tanya Warren. In the last three seasons, UNI is 2-29 in games where the Panthers did not score 60 points. Conversely, UNI finished 23-11 in games where it broke that barrier.
MCLEOD AND PROUD This is UNI's fourth season playing in the McLeod Center. The Panthers are 25-18 in the facility.
NICE TO MEET YOU The Panthers signed a pair of Minnesota standouts to its 2010-11 roster on Nov. 11. Brooke Brown and Amanda Barton each signed a national letter of intent to play for the Panthers. Barton, a 6-2 post from Elysian, Minn., holds the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown High School record for points scored in a game (35) and in a career (1,057). She is also the WEM career rebounding leader, grabbing 820 boards through her first three seasons. Brown, a 5-8 guard from Chanhassen, Minn. comes to UNI after a standout career at Chaska High School. She earned all-conference and honorable mention all-state honors after averaging 13.2 points, 3.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game as a junior.
WE GO WAY BACK The 2009-10 roster features three sets of high school teammates. Seniors Lindsey Swanson and Nicole Clausen played together at Denison-Schleswig High School. Junior Erin Brocka and sophomore Indy Uhlenhopp were teammates at North Butler High School, and sophomore Katelin Oney and K.K. Armstrong both played at Washington High School in Cedar Rapids.
TWO THREES FOR THREE-TWO Kim Wypiszynski was 2-of-2 from three-point range in the Panthers' season opener again North Dakota State on Nov. 13. The senior forward made just four threes in her junior season, never making more than one per contest.
LONG DECEMBER The Panthers are looking for their first win in the month of December since 2006. UNI finished 0-5 in December in both 2007 and 2008.
WELCOME BACK The season opener marked the first action for sophomore Jacqui Kalin since Dec. 6, 2008. The guard missed the majority of 2008-09 with an ankle injury. Kalin finished 7-of-13 from the floor, including 2-of-6 from long distance, to score 18 points against NDSU.
