PANORA, Iowa - University of Northern Iowa freshman Blair Bonner tied her career-low round with a 73 and the Panther women's golf team sits in third place following the opening round of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship being held at Lake Panorama National Resort.

As a squad, the Panthers shot their second-best round of the year with a team score of 306. UNI trails tournament leader Illinois State by five shots and second-place Wichita State by only two shots following round one. All four Panthers' scoring in the event had rounds in the 70s, which marked the first time all season the Panthers accomplished that feat.

Bonner led the way with her 73, which left her one shot out of the lead and in a tie for second place at 1-over par for the tournament. Bonner's round included a pair of birdies. Bonner scored a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole on her outward nine and then birdied the par-5 12th hole in her inward nine. As a squad the Panthers carded five birdies on the day.

Kim Weber fired a 77, which included a birdie on the par-4 15th. Ann Arnason and Shanon Davis each tallied rounds of 78. Arnason birdied the par-4 15th hole, while Davis birdied the par-4 sixth hole. Heather Frye also carded an 84, which saw her shoot a front-nine 38.

"It was a perfect day the weather was really nice," UNI head coach John Bermel said. "We got to practicing last week and we were playing really well. Everybody is playing decent so we'll try and keep it going."

Bradley's Kelly Amundrud is the tournament leader following the first 18 holes with an even-par round of 72.

Round two gets underway Saturday at 8 a.m., with the final round taking place Sunday at 8 a.m.
