Cedar Falls, IA--The University of Northern Iowa women's golf team completed the 2006-07 season at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Tuesday, April 17. This finish marked the seventh top-five finish for the Panthers this season. UNI never finished higher than 10th place all season. The Panthers competed in five tournaments during both the fall and spring seasons.

The Panthers had three third-place finishes and two second-place and fifth-place finishes this season. The Panthers also had a seventh-place finish and a 10th-place finish. UNI's lowest two-round score of the season came at the UMKC Kenneth Smith Classic in Lee's Summit, Mo., when the team shot a 620. Their lowest three-round total was 920 at the Lady Indian Classic Tournament in Jonesboro, Ark.

Seniors Stef Nelson and Emily Heseman ended their collegiate golfing careers this season. Each of them contributed to UNI's success this season. Nelson competed in every event this season and finished with the lowest score in four of those tournaments. She finished the season with a stroke average of 81. Nelson finished with 15 rounds in the 70s, her lowest, 72, coming in the NIU Springlake Invitational in Sebring, Fla.

"We will miss Stef and Emily next season," said head coach John Bermel. "Since transfering from Iowa State, Stef has been a solid player for us by having a low stroke average every year. Stef was low at the conference tournament all three years she played at UNI."

Heseman participated in nine of the 10 meets and finished with a stroke average of 81.4. Her lowest round came at the Lady Indian Classic Tournament, when she shot a par 72 round. This score helped the team finish third and Heseman finished in a tie for 14th. She was third on the team in rounds in the 70s with 11.

"Emily will be missed as well," said Bermel. "She always had a great attitude, worked hard and played consistently."

Molly Schemm (Fr.) finished the season with a stroke average of 78. She competed in all ten tournaments and finished with the lowest score in six of the outings. She was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year. Along with that honor, Schemm was also chosen for the Missouri Valley All-Conference team, with nine other Valley golfers. She had the most rounds in the 70s with 18 and her lowest round was 70 at the Lady Indian Classic.

Five other Panthers, Ann Arnason (Fr.), Brittany Bomar (Fr.), Ellen Fry (So.), Heather Frye (So.) and Kim Weber (So.) competed in tournaments this season. Arnason and Bomar both made their Valley debuts in the fall season. Arnason played in eight meets and finished the season with a 85.1 stroke average. Bomar competed as an individual in four meets and finished with a 87.1 stoke average.

"We had a pretty good season this year overall," said Bermel. "We improved as a team and have some very good players coming up."

The Panthers have seven players returning for next season and a new addition to the team. Schemm, Frye, Weber, Fry, Arnason and Bomar all saw action this year and will return next year. Steph Easterling, after redshirting and sitting out a year following shoulder surgery, will be returning next season as well. Shanon Davis, from West Des Moines Valley High School, will be joining the Panthers for the 2007-08 season. There will be no seniors on next season's roster, so the team should be strong for the next two years.

"With Molly and Steph returning we should have two strong players to guide us next season," said Bermel. "We have a lot of experience coming back overall, so we should be in pretty good shape when the fall season rolls around."
