MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Northern Iowa soccer could not find a way through the Minnesota defense, falling 5-0 to the Golden Gophers in the season opener.

The Panthers (0-1) were only able to manage two shots in the loss, both by sophomore forward Chelsie Hochstedler. Both came on goal.

Minnesota (1-0) scored its first goal in the 23rd minute, when Clare Grimwood scored on a pass from Angie Olson. The Golden Gophers took a 2-0 lead into the break when Julie Rezac scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute.

Shari Eckstrom gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead with a goal in the 64th minute, and Sara Clancy scored two goals in the 77th and 82nd minute to bring the final score to 5-0.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Potzman collected nine saves in the loss.

The Panthers will return to action on Sunday when they host Upper Iowa in an exhibition match at 1 p.m. at the CVYSA Complex.
