Panthers Fall 5-1 to Western Michigan
Sept. 8, 2006 PANTHERS FALL 5-1 TO WESTERN MICHIGAN Omaha, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team dropped a 5-1 decision to Western Michigan in its opening match at the Diadora Classic. Sophomore Lindsey Daugherty scored the lone goal for the Panthers. WMU took an early lead in the 19th minute with a goal from 45 yards out. The Broncos extended their advantage to 2-0 with a goal in the 31st minute, and held the 2-0 margin into halftime. After a 53rd minute Bronco goal made the score 3-0, Daugherty (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) rocketed a 15-footer past WMU goalkeeper Sarah Phillips to cut the Bronco advantage to 3-1. The rally was short lived, however, as 58th and 82nd minute Western Michigan goals put the score at 5-1 to end the contest. Daugherty's goal was her first of the year, and fifth of her career. As a team, UNI let loose a season-high 11 shots with four counting as shots on goal. Daugherty led the team with a five shots, including two on goal. Gretchen Orcutt (Sioux Falls, S.D./O'Gorman) fired four shots, with one on goal. Daugherty's five shots are the most a Panther has recorded in a single game this season. UNI's record falls to 0-5-0 on the season. The Panthers face in-state rival Iowa State, Sunday at 11 a.m.
