Box Score

The UNI women's soccer team was victorious over Missouri Valley Conference foe Drury tonight, 3-2 in double overtime at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. Junior Shanon Dechant (Marion, Iowa) led the Panthers with two goals including the game winner in the second overtime period.

The Panthers were the first to get on the board when Dechant connected on a penalty kick at the 19-minute mark. UNI is now two-for-two on penalty kicks this season.

Drury countered in the 34th minute when Rachel Sutcliffe scored an unassisted goal off a deflection in front of the UNI net. The teams were knotted up at one apiece going into halftime.

In the second half UNI regained the lead when sophomore Aimee Rasmusson (Cedar Falls, Iowa) scored her second goal of the season in the 49th minute. The shot was set up nicely by two beautiful passes from freshman Alexandra Sowell (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore Sarah Otten (Marshalltown, Iowa) who both picked up assists on the play.

Drury kept battling and was able to tie the game at the 81:52 mark, off an unassisted 35-yard shot from the center of the field by Taylor Fuller to force overtime.

The teams continued to battle through the first overtime period and into the second overtime before Dechant nailed the game winning shot in the 115th minute of play. Dechant took the ball at midfield and used her speed to beat the defenders leaving an open net. The goal was Dechant's fifth of the season, with all five goals coming in the last four games.

"I felt we were in control for the majority of the game," UNI head coach Linda Whitehead said. "What Shanon was able to do tonight, especially at the end of the game was amazing. I am very proud of our team for their effort."

Freshman Krista Thorley (Ontario, Canada) played the full game for UNI in goal and recorded 11 saves. Dechant and junior Candice Divoky (Solon, Iowa) each fired four shots for the Panthers, while Rasmusson, freshman Amy Seubert (Minnetonka, Minn.), and junior Sarah Huffer (Austin, Minn.) each took two.

The Panthers improve to 2-8-2 on the season and are 2-1 in the MVC. Drury drops to 2-9-1 and falls to 0-3 in conference play. UNI will host Southwest Missouri State (5-3-3, 0-1-2) on Sunday afternoon at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. The game will start at 1:00 p.m.
