SMS Edges UNI, 2-0
Oct. 10, 2004 The UNI women's soccer team fell to Southwest Missouri State, 2-0 today at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. SMS scored a goal in each half and tallied 23 shots on goal. The Panthers were strong defensively but only managed 11 shots in the game. The Bears scored at the 25:49 mark when Sarah Guenther placed a deflected ball, off a corner kick, into the back of the UNI net. SMS outshot UNI 14-to-three in the first half. The Panthers came to life in the second half firing eight shots to the Bears nine. Tara Miley took an assist from Guenther in the 76th minute to put SMS up by two. UNI failed to convert on a couple of good scoring opportunities. Freshman Krista Thorley (Ontario, Canada) turned in a steady performance protecting the goal for UNI. Thorley collected 13 saves in the game. Junior midfielder Jillian Carroll (Leawood, Kan.) led the Panthers with five shots, four on goal. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Otten (Marshalltown, Iowa) took two shots while four other Panthers had one shot.
UNI drops to 2-9-2 overall and sits at 2-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. SMS improves to 6-4-2, and 1-1-2 in league play. The Panthers take to the road for two games next weekend. They will travel to Omaha, Neb. to face Creighton on Friday and then take on Drake in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday. They return home for the final two games of the regular season on Oct. 21st against Illinois State and Oct. 28th against Iowa.
