Box Score

The UNI women's soccer team was not able to hold onto the 1-0 first half lead as it fell to Illinois State 2-1 in the final regular season Missouri Valley Conference game. The Redbirds outshot UNI 27-4 and compiled 16 shots on goal. Freshman goalie Krista Thorley turned in another stellar performance for UNI collecting 14 saves.

The Panthers were the first to get on the board when junior forward Sarah Huffer scored her second goal of the season in the 16th minute. Huffer's goal was set up by two nice passes from sophomore Aimee Rasmusson and sophomore Sarah Otten. Both Rasmusson and Otten were credited with assists.

UNI went into halftime with a 1-0 lead but Kanisha Campbell tied the game in the 49th minute with an unassisted shot from 35 yards out that just barely fit under the crossbar and sailed over the outstretched hand of Thorley. Kim Collins took an assist from Lauren Kahlenbeck in the 59th minute to put the Redbirds up 2-1. The Panthers played aggressive in the closing minutes but could not get the equalizer.

Two players left the game for UNI due to injury. Junior forward Shanon Dechant was helped off the field just early in the first half when she injured her ankle and freshman defender Meghan Schoeberl was injured in the middle of the second half. Dechant leads UNI with five goals and 11 points this season.

UNI falls to 2-12-2 overall and 2-5 in the MVC while Illinois State improves to 8-5-3 for the season and 3-2-2 in the league. The Panthers close out the regular season next Thursday (Oct. 28) when they host the Iowa Hawkeyes. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. Free coupons will be given away to fans that attend the game.
