Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. -  The University of Norther Iowa women's soccer team dropped its opening round State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament matchup with Creighton 2-0, Sunday. The Panthers end their season with a 6-10-2 overall mark.

The Panthers managed seven shots against a stingy Bluejay defense. Jenna Schonert (Racine, Wisc./William Horlick) led UNI with three shots.

After an Amy Seubert (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) yellow card saved a Creighton breakaway halfway through the first period, the Bluejays put took a 1-0 lead when the MVC's second-leading scorer Marcy Gans scored her ninth goal of the season. Gans maneuvered through the box after taking a set-play pass and sneaked a liner past UNI goalkeeper Heidi O'Mara (Stillwater Minn./Stillwater Area) to give Creighton a 1-0 advantage.  Both defenses held through the remainder of the first half and the Bluejays led 1-0 at intermission.

The Panthers came out of the gates with new life and spent the majority of the first 10 minutes of the second period in Creighton territory. UNI missed a crucial scoring opportunity in the 38th minute after Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey wandered from the box to chase an errant shot that fell short of the goal. Freshman Chelsie Hochstedler (Marion, Iowa/Linn Mar) let fly a rebound shot, but not before Casey had returned to her position for the save.

Gans added to the Creighton lead and her conference-best goal total with another goal in the 67th minute. Gans' 10th goal of the season gave Creighton a 2-0 lead over the Panthers with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest. The Creighton defense held, and the Panthers fell 2-0.

Creighton advances to round two of the State Farm MVC Tournament and will play Evansville at Black Beauty Field Friday. UNI ends its season with a 6-10-2 overall record, its best mark since a 10-win 2003 season. The Panthers were playing in their first State Farm MVC Tournament contest since 2004.
