Box Score

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team secured an 8-0 win over Grand View Friday in an exhibition game in the UNI-Dome. All 16 players on the Panthers' active roster saw action, including all four pitchers, who each threw two innings.

The Panthers had an outstanding night at the plate, led by newcomer Crystal Keiper (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Jefferson), who went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs. Seven different UNI players drove in at least one run, with senior Ashley Lepley ( Albia, Iowa/Albia) and sophomore Sarah Bakey (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) each tallying a pair of RBIs.

In all, nine Panthers recorded a hit, with three posting multi-hit games. Of the Panthers' 13 hits as a team, five were doubles.

Lepley and Bakey along with fellow pitchers Jen Larsen (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Liz Adams (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar), held the Vikings scoreless on two hits over the game's eight innings.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after Stephanie Aguero (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) scored on a double by Lepley, and Lepley then scored on a RBI single by Rachel Gerking (Spirit Lake, Iowa/Spirit Lake) in the first inning.

The Panthers added to their lead in the bottom of the second when Keiper scored on a single by Megan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa/Central). Stefaney Shalla (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) pushed UNI's lead to 4-0 on a sacrifice fly by Lepley.

After scoring again the fourth the Panthers wrapped things up with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Bakey drove in two of those runs with a double and then scored herself when Michelle Phillips (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) stroked a double of her own.

The Panthers will officially open the season Saturday by hosting the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic. UNI plays Dayton at 3 p.m. and then takes on South Dakota State at 5 p.m.
