South Dakota State Tops North Dakota in Late Innings, 8-7Feb. 9, 2008
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - South Dakota State scored seven unanswered runs over the final three innings Saturday to earn an 8-7 triumph over North Dakota and make a winner of Joanna Lane in her debut as head coach, in the first game of the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic Trailing 7-1 entering the top of the fifth, the Jackrabbits responded with five runs in the frame and another pair in the top of the seventh to take the win in the UNI-Dome. In a game featuring a total of 19 walks issued by the teams' pitching staffs, the clubs combined to strand 19 runners on base. Six different players drove in at least one run for the Jacks, with Sam Heinzman tallying a pair of RBIs. Jessica Vineyard scored twice for SDSU, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Jacks starting pitcher Jenna Marston shook off early struggles to hold on for the complete-game win, giving up all seven North Dakota runs on seven hits. Hannah-Rose Peters took the loss for the Sioux, surrendering three runs over the game's final 2 1/3 innings. After the Jacks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Stacey Evans, North Dakota answered in a big way in the bottom of the frame. The Sioux drew four walks in their half of the inning and translated those free passes into three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Nicole Puerling drove in a run with a single, Hannah-Rose Peters pushed another across by drawing a bases-loaded walk and Amber Roth brought the third tally home with an RBI groundout. Lindsey Gaustad and Peters each drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth to push the Sioux's lead to 5-1, before Amber Roth delivered a two-RBI double to left-center that brought home both Guastad and Nicole Larson. The two-out hit bumped North Dakota's lead to 7-1 after four frames. The Jacks found their offensive groove in the top of the fifth, batting around their lineup and putting up five runs to draw within a 7-6 margin. Greta Stroh brought in SDSU's first run with a single to score Kiley Schwedhelm and then helped execute a successful double steal that allowed Dani Broshar to swipe home. Stroh then scored on an RBI single by Vineyard to cut the Sioux's lead to three runs.
After a North Dakota pitching change, Vineyard crossed on an RBI single by Ashley Durazo, who then scored on a double by Brittany Postma to bring the Jacks within a run. South Dakota State continued its rally in the top of the seventh, taking the lead with a pair of runs on a two-run double by Heinzman. Roth led the way at the plate for North Dakota, driving in three runs, while Peters posted a pair of RBIs without registering a hit. The Jacks return to action against host team UNI in a game scheduled for 5 p.m., while North Dakota returns to the field immediately to face Dayton. NOTES |
