CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - North Dakota State improved its record to 3-0 for the opening weekend of the season with a 6-1 win over South Dakota State to open play Sunday in the Ramada Inn UNI-Dome Softball Invitational.

The Bison broke onto the board in the first, with leadoff hitter Lynnae Foshag, who drew a walk to open the game, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Melissa Chmielewski. Despite a bases-loaded situation with no outs, the Bison managed to push only that single run across.

The Jacks answered in the bottom of the second, as Brittany Postma led off the inning by stretching a drive through the right side of the infield for a triple and was driven in one batter later by Steph Kuhl's RBI single to center field.

Three more runs in the top of the fifth gave the Bison some breathing room, with Laurel Pipkin leading off the inning and Cantrell reaching on an error. Chmielewsi then stroked a double to drive Pipkin home, and Jackie Currie followed with an RBI single to plate Taylor Lynn, running in place of Cantrell. Aimee Enzler delivered the final run with an RBI base hit to push Chmielewski across.

A double by Cantrell in the sixth brought another Bison run across, with Grete Peterson scoring on the drive into the left field corner. Chmielewski followed with an RBI groundout to plate Pipkin, pushing NDSU's lead to a comfortable 6-1 advantage.

Despite leaving nine runners on base, the Bison's 11 hits were enough for the win. Pipkin finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate, while Chmielewski drove in three runs.

Allison Bakke picked up her third win in as many starts for the Bison.

North Dakota State closes out their action in the Ramada Inn UNI-Dome Softball Invitational with a game against Northern Illinois at noon, while the Jackrabbits (0-3) face Drake at 2 p.m. in their final game of the weekend.
