Jacks Survive Bulldogs 10-8Feb. 11, 2007
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- In a game highlighted by 18 runs and 23 hits, SDSU outlasted Drake 10-8. Kiley Schwedhelm's first-inning three-run homer set the tone for the Jacks. After Schwedhelm's homer gave the Jacks a three run lead, a hit and two walks loaded the bases for Drake in the bottom of the first. Jaci Faidley came through with an infield single and Marilyn Buss delivered an RBI groundout to pull the Bulldogs within one. Kelsey Kahler tied the game with a high chopper to third, scoring Emily Hajduk. Kahler then faked stealing second to bait a throw, allowing Faidley to score and give Drake a 4-3 advantage after one. A second-inning RBI single by Elena Leon scored Kristin Birocci and gave Drake a 5-3 lead after two The Jacks loaded the bases in the third with a pair of walks and an infield hit to the third baseman. Teresa Howell drew a walk to score Samantha Heinzman and bring SDSU within one. Jessica Vineyard crushed a two-run double to the right-centerfield gap two batters later to give the Jacks a 6-5 advantage. A costly error gave SDSU another run in the third and a 7-5 lead through three. Drake cut the Jack lead to one on a Hajduk solo shot and tied the game on a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Carrie Hatfield that scored Faidley. With the score tied at seven in the sixth, SDSU catcher Steph Kuhl stroked DU pitcher Cassie Heller's offering down the left field line for a two-run double that scored and Heinzman and Samantha Fedson and gave the Jacks a 9-7 lead through six. A seventh-inning RBI single by Fedson gave the Jacks a three-run cushion entering the final half-inning. The Bulldogs threatened in their half of the frame and cut the deficit to two, but left the bases loaded to end the game 10-8 in favor of SDSU Hajduk led the offense for Drake, finishing 2-3 with a homer and two runs scored. Schwedhelm led the way for SDSU, finishing 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Kim Westendorf took the win for the Jacks despite allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits. Her record improves to 1-2 on the season. Heller took the loss after allowing two runs to cross the plate in two innings of relief work.
The Jacks improve to 1-3 on the season. Drake falls to 1-2 overall. The Ramada Inn UNI-Dome Softball Invitational continues with a matchup between UNI and Northern Illinois. First pitch is expected at 4:30. |
