Panther Softball Squad Takes Two on Saturday at SEMO Spring Classic

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - The University of Northern Iowa softball squad tossed a pair of shutouts on Saturday at the SEMO Spring Classic with wins over IUPUI and Lipscomb.
The Panthers improved to 6-9-1 on the season, while dropping IUPUI to 1-10 and Lipscomb to 3-8. UNI 2, IUPUI 0 The Panthers' Nikki Ferden collected three hits and played a part of both run-scoring innings. Ferden singled in the third after Jamie Kelling had led off with a single up the middle. Rachael Rogers eventually scored an unearned run in the inning after the top of the Panthers' order had set the table. Ferden scored an insurance run in the fifth after leading off the inning with a triple. Ferden was plated on an RBI ground out by Rogers. UNI was able to get out of danger in the bottom of the sixth as IUPUI loaded the bases with two outs. But Wright was able to get out of the jam with a foul-out. UNI 10, LIPSCOMB 0 (5 INN.) UNI's Uju Ibekwe (3-3) pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out four. The Panther offense scored two in the first on Rachael Rogers' fourth home run of the season. UNI added four more runs in the second to take a 6-0 lead. UNI did not let up by tallying two more runs in the third and a plated two more in the fifth. Jamie Kelling led the way with three hits, two runs and five RBI. Rogers also tallied three RBI in the contest.
NOTES: The Panthers will be in action on Sunday in the SEMO Spring Classic as they take on the Southeast Missouri State RedHawks at 10 a.m. ... UNI will then head into bracket play at noon ... Rogers leads the Panthers in home runs (4) and RBI (16). |
