            WICHITA, Kan. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to top Wichita State 5-3 Friday night in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

            Allison Galvin finished 3-of-3 with a run scored, and Mackenzie Daigh finished 2-of-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Panthers (13-11, 1-0 MVC). Jen Larsen hit 1-of-4 with a two-run home run. Melissa Tillett struck out two and gave up six hits to earn the win for UNI.

            Daigh was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the first, and Larsen homered to right to put the Panthers on the board first, 2-0.

            WSU (9-13, 0-1 MVC) used three hits and a UNI error to tally two runs and tie the game in the bottom of fifth.

            Courtney Dunker hit a one-out double in the top of the seventh. Whitney Plein came in to pinch run, and Kim Wachholder singled to send her home and break the tie. Lindsay Callanan ran for Wachholder, and she moved to third on a throwing error after Galvin reached on a bunt single. Megan Machovec grounded out to the pitcher, but Callanan scored on the play. Daigh hit a two-out single up the middle to plate Galvin and give UNI a 5-2 advantage.

            Sammie Shook hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but Tillett held the Shockers to just one more base runner in the inning to secure the win for UNI.

            The Panthers tallied eight hits in the contest and left four runners on base. WSU finished with six hits and left five runners on base.

            UNI and Wichita State will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday.
