Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

AMES, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team fell twice to Iowa State on Wednesday, dropping the front end of a doubleheader 6-3 and suffering a 5-3 loss in the nightcap.

The Cyclones (19-24) used a big inning in each game to earn the sweep, translating a four-run third inning in game one and a three-run third frame in the finale into a pair of victories over the Panthers (13-18).

The Panthers wasted little time getting on the board in the nightcap, with Kelly Papesh (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) scorching a single through the right side to score Megan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) and give UNI a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The Cyclones grabbed the lead with a three-run third inning, however, with Katie Reichling knocking a two-run double and eventually stealing home to put ISU up, 3-1.

UNI benefited from a Cyclone error in the fifth inning, as Stephanie Aguero's pop-up was dropped with two outs on the board.  The miscue allowed Whitney Link (Ankeny, Iowa/Des Moines East) to score from second, cutting Iowa State's lead to 3-2.

Jessica Quade pushed the run back to two runs in the sixth with her second homer of the day, a solo shot to left field.  Amanda Bradberry then bumped the Cyclones' lead to 5-2 by stroking a triple and scoring a wild pitch.

Another Cyclone error gave the Panthers life in the final inning, with Aguero reaching first and Mandy Kumamoto (Torrance, Calif./West) scoring as a result.   The miscue brought UNI within two runs, but the Panthers were unable to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation later in the inning.

Bakey was strong in her first career start, giving up just four hits and not allowing an earned run over her first five innings of work in the pitching circle.  The Cyclones tagged the right-hander for a pair of runs in the sixth, however, as Bakey went on to record her first career complete game.

Bakey dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss, while ISU's Charissa Carlin improved to 9-6 and reliever Alyssa Ransom picked up her first save of the season.

GAME ONE

A Courtney Wray single put the Cyclones on the board in the bottom of the third inning, plating Bradberry to give Iowa State a 1-0 lead.  That advantage grew to 4-0 with three consecutive one-out RBI singles by Riechling, Ashley Killeen and Kristen Karanzias.

All four runs were charged to starter Ashley Lepley (Albia, Iowa/Albia), who had retired six consecutive Cyclones heading into the third and was pulled in favor of reliever Jen Larsen (Moline, Ill./Moline) after 2 1/3 innings of work.

Iowa State added another tally in the fourth, with Alex Johnson driving a two-out double to score Kristy Olsen.

After Lepley drew a walk to lead off the fifth inning, Papesh put UNI on the board with her second hit of the game, a double that brought Lepley home to cut ISU's lead to 5-1.

A solo home run by Quade pushed the Cyclones' lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the frame, however.

Bakey, who entered the game in the fifth inning in relief of Larsen, answered for UNI in the top of the sixth.

The freshman tallied the first hit and first runs batted in of her career by uncorking a two-run home run to left field.  The blast, which also plated Aguero (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine), cut the Cyclones' lead to 6-3, but that was as close as the Panthers would get.

The Panthers open the home portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Indiana State in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Panther Park.  Saturday's doubleheader begins at noon, while first pitch for Sunday's single game is also set for noon.
