CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa softball team dropped an 8-1 decision to fellow Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley on Thursday.

UNI (12-35-1, 2-18 MVC) collected only four hits and committed five errors, which led to six unearned runs in the contest. Bradley (24-21, 9-11 MVC) needed only six hits to score the eight runs.

Bradley struck first in the top of the third inning when Molly Bergeson knocked in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Panthers answered back in the bottom half of the third when Dyann Peterson reached on a single to left. Peterson moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Mandy Kumamoto. Leadoff hitter Jamie Kelling then smacked an RBI single to center to score Peterson and knot the game at 1-1.

But it all went south for the Panthers in the fifth for the Panthers. Bradley was able to score five times on three hits and the Braves took advantage of two Panther errors.

The Braves would add another pair of runs in the sixth to up the score to 8-1.

Peterson led the way at the plate for the Panthers with a pair of hits. Kelly Pepesh and Kelling collected the other two Panther knocks.

Bradley's Joanna Pettit had two hits and two RBI, while Kimberly Dobill also had two hits and scored two runs to lead the Braves.

Uju Ibekwe (5-15) was the hard-luck loser for the Panthers as she worked a complete game and gave up only two earned runs. Ibekwe struck out four and gave up only six hits.

Bradley's Ashley Birdson (15-8) got the win as she pitched a complete game four-hitter. Birdson struck out five Panthers.

 

 

UNI will be back in action on Saturday at noon with a doubleheader against league foe Illinois State at Panther Park.
