Box Score

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team dropped its final game of the season Sunday, falling 5-1 to Evansville in the finale of the teams' Missouri Valley Conference series at Cooper Stadium.

The Aces jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning, as Amanda Ockomon's lead-off single translated into a run when Brittany Herald stroked a solid single to center field to score Ockomon from second.

The Panthers put together a solid scoring opportunity in the top of the third, with Mandy Kumamoto (Torrance, Calif./West) leading off with a single to left and Megan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) following with a slap hit that went for an infield single.

Herald halted the threat on her own, however, fielding a pop-up by Jen Larsen (Moline, Ill./Moline) and then stepping on the first base bag to double off Machovec and get the Aces out of the inning.

Liz Mooney's 12th home run of the year put the Aces up 3-0 in the third, with her homer to left field plating Ockomon, who again led off a frame with a single.

Evansville added another pair of tallies in the fourth inning, as an RBI groundout by Cassey Kemna and a UNI error allowed the Aces to push Ashley Werner and Kristen Shirk across.

Ashley Lepley (Albia, Iowa/Albia) put the Panthers on the board in the sixth with a solo home run, her 10th homer of the season.  The deep drive to left-center field made Lepley just the fourth player in UNI history to register a double-digit home run tally in a single season.

Kumamoto, playing in her final game in a Panther uniform, went 2-for-2 to cap a career season that saw her finish with a .295 batting average, third-best among UNI's regular players.

Larsen, who started in the circle for the Panthers, took the loss to fall to 9-15 on the year.  Jacki Bradley picked up the win to improve to 11-6 for Evansville (33-19, 12-13 MVC).

The Panthers conclude the season with a 19-32 record, including a 5-17 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play.

NOTES

Ashley Lepley's 10th homer of the season Sunday gave her the fourth-highest single-season total ever put up by a UNI player. Angela Higgins hit a school-record 14 longballs in 2003, while Jody Dean twice had 12 and Lindsay Wood tallied 11 on her way to first team all-America status in 2002.
